On April 18, eight BSIA students traveled to Ottawa to participate in the inaugural “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights Student Symposium and Policy Challenge.” Co-hosted by the Digital Inclusion Lab at Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the event included 50 students from 10 universities across Canada. Its purpose was to “understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating opportunities and challenges for people in realizing the full scope of their human rights.”
BSIA students presented policy recommendations to expert panels consisting of representatives from government, academia, civil society and the private sector on three topics: 1) How AI can be leveraged to support the rights of refugees; 2) How AI can be used to combat online hate; and 3) How governments should respond when AI systems go awry.
This was another excellent opportunity for our students to provide recommendations to government.
